Lyme disease was first identified in Lyme, Connecticut in 1975. It is spread by the Ixodes scapularis tick, more commonly known as the blacklegged tick or the deer tick. Due to the dramatic increase in Lyme disease in Southwest Ohio over the last decade, it is now recommended that ALL dogs in this area be regularly screened for Lyme disease and those who spend time outdoors be on year-round tick protection. This handout explains what you need to know about this disease as it applies to dogs in this area.
